All About Olla Watering Systems

At this time of year, one of the biggest struggles for gardens and green hubs is keeping everything watered! When the weather is unpredictable, it’s tricky to make sure plants don’t dry out, especially during unexpected hot spells. That’s where ollas come in.

An olla (pronounced “oy-ya”) is a simple, ancient watering system that’s making a comeback for good reason. It makes use of unglazed terracotta pots which are buried in the soil near your plants. You fill it with water, and the water slowly seeps through the pot’s walls right to the roots. No water wasted on thirsty weeds or evaporating in the sun!

Ollas can reduce wasted water by up to 70% because the water is stored underground, significantly cutting down evaporation. Plus, it means your plants get a steady, gentle supply – meaning less stress and better growth. Handily, it also helps us save money: less water usage is something we could all use more of in our green community hubs.

Thinking of giving it a go? You’re in luck! Lou & Steven from Lady Pit Lane allotments have put together a quick, easy video showing you how to make your own olla watering system. It’s perfect for beginners and a great water-saving activity for green community hubs. Let us know if you do end up trying it out – we’d love to see your ollas in action!
