PILOT HUBS: New events in Workington

Workington Green Community Hub was awarded funding from Natural England to run five educational events, with an environmental theme, in 5 different areas around Workington. The aim was to raise awareness in the local communities, of the hub and other nature-based provision as well as to take feedback from local residents to find out what they believe would enhance their local area so that, we could organise future educational activities and training opportunities.

So far, we have held three events in Northside, Salterbeck and in the Town Centre and we have engaged with more than 100 local residents who have had the opportunity to find out information and participate in a wide array of nature-based taster activities delivered by a huge variety of businesses and organisations. Such activities have included composting demonstrations, bush craft skills and activities, river dipping, nature-based arts & crafts, seed planting, mindfulness and meditation, chi gong, making bird feeders, wellness walking, trampolining in the park and so much more!

Local residents were also entered into a free prize draw to win energy efficient kitchen appliances such as slow cookers and air fryers, were given FREE winter warm packs, which included a thermal hat, gloves, socks and a hot water bottle, indulged in free refreshments and had the opportunity to get energy saving advice from Groundworks Green Doctor and advice on how to reduce your food waste from Cumbria County Council.

We have received fantastic feedback from local community members who have said they have found the events extremely useful, have really enjoyed themselves, have connected with others and who look forward to attending future training sessions and activities which will enable them to learn skills that will benefit themselves and their local area.

The next two events are scheduled to take place in Harrington and Mooreclose in March 2023. You can find more information about these by following our Workington Green Community Hub Facebook page. We look forward to seeing you there!

Workington is one of our pilot hubs, supported by Groundwork Cumbria and North East, as part of the Northern Network project. Find out more here.
